Climate
change is testing the world’s commitment to sustainable development and nowhere
is that test more visible than in Uganda’s classrooms. Floods wash away school
buildings. Droughts dry up sanitation systems. Girls drop out due to lack of
menstrual hygiene support. Refugee children sit in overcrowded classrooms with
no materials, no trained teachers, and no hope of catching up. Education, the
cornerstone of every Sustainable Development Goal is under siege.
Uganda
has made bold commitments. Its National Development Plan III is 95% aligned
with the SDGs. The government has recognized education as a priority adaptation
sector in its climate strategy, and the United Nations Sustainable Development
Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2021–2025 calls for integrated, inclusive, and
climate-resilient learning systems2. But implementation is slow, and the gap
between policy and practice remains wide.
Humanity
Horizons was founded in December 2023 and incorporated in August 2024 to close
that gap. Through our Education Sector Reform & Policy Development Program
(ERPDP), we are turning global goals into local transformation one school, one
learner, one policy at a time.
ERPDP
directly advances:
SDG
4 – Quality Education We are embedding climate literacy, civic engagement, and
digital skills into Uganda’s curriculum. We train teachers in trauma-informed
pedagogy and inclusive learning. We pilot new models that center community
voice and real-world relevance.
SDG
5 – Gender Equality We install gender-sensitive sanitation facilities, launch
menstrual health education, and support girls’ leadership programs. We
integrate GBV prevention into school governance and ensure that girls not only
stay in school they thrive.
SDG
13 – Climate Action We treat education as a frontline climate adaptation tool.
Our curriculum innovations prepare youth to understand, respond to, and lead in
the face of climate shocks. We support schools to become hubs of resilience
from tree planting to flood mapping.
SDG
10 – Reduced Inequalities We work in refugee-hosting districts, underserved rural
areas, and informal settlements. Our programs are designed for displaced
learners, children with disabilities, and those excluded from mainstream
systems. We ensure no one is left behind.
SDG
16 – Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions We train youth in civic engagement,
support school-based governance reforms, and help communities shape education
policy. We build trust between learners, educators, and institutions laying the
foundation for peaceful, inclusive societies.
Our
work is also aligned with Uganda’s commitments under the NESD 2030 Framework,
the Climate Change Act (2021), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. We don’t
just teach the SDGs, we deliver them.
But
the urgency is growing. Climate shocks are accelerating. Inequality is
deepening. And education systems are struggling to keep up. ERPDP is ready but
scaling it requires bold investment, strategic partnerships, and shared
leadership.
Humanity
Horizons invites donors, ministries, educators, and changemakers to join us.
Because the SDGs are not just targets. They are promises. And through ERPDP, we
are keeping them one learner, one policy, one community at a time.
